Surname—Rees—Reese—The name “Rees” or “Reese” is derived from the German word “Riese,” which means “giant.” It has reference to the physical characteristic of being very large or tall. In northern Germany the name has the letter “e” ending. There are some 2,000 bearers of the name Reese in the Hannover, Hamburg and coastal regions. As you move farther west and south the number of Reese occurrences diminish drastically and as they do the Rees listings increase, although they never read 2,000. The most you will find in the states of Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland and Baden-Wuerttemberg is about 500 family names spelled Rees. The greatest preponderance of the Rees name occurs in the Breisgua region of the former Grand Duchy of Baden. Look in Freiburg i. Br., Kirchzarten and Oberried, all within a few miles of each other, and Herbolzheim, situated north of Freiburg. In Holland the name is Van Rees. The city of Rees, in the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, is located less than 3 miles from the Dutch border.
