1788 - Massachusetts became the 6th state on 6 Feb 1788

Archives—Massachusetts Archives—A tripe threat, this sit’s Massachusetts Archives
database, spanning 1629-1799, is just the beginning. The vital records database spans
1841-1915. And the in-progress project to index more than 1 million arrivals through
the port of Boston (1848-1891) is worth checking back on even if your ancestors didn’t
stay in the Bay State.

CD Review - Massachusetts Probate, Town, and Vital Records [CD],
ISBN 0806397543, Between 1630 and 1642, the period of the "Great Migration," some 30,000 people emigrated from England to Massachusetts. By the time of the American Revolution, nearly everyone in Massachusetts could trace their ancestry to one of these 30,000 people--so where better for today’s researcher to commence his own investigations than in the probate, town, and vital records of Massachusetts found on the 13 books on this CD. Six of the books deal specifically with vital records. Vital records usually contain the name of the individual involved in the event, the date of the event, and the name of the town in which the event took place. Four of the volumes are histories of Massachusetts towns. The remainder of the titles included in this Family Archive CD contain abstracts of Massachusetts probate records--wills, inventories, administrators" accounts, receipts, divisions of estates, petitions, and guardianships. In all, the CD identifies a combined 160,000 individuals. Price: $29.99
All names mentioned in the combined works are accessible on this CD via a single electronic index. Listed below are the books included in this CD:

Book Review - Massachusetts and Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis (1885-1966) - A Reprinting, in Alphabetical Order by Surname, of the Sixteen Multi-Ancestor Compendia (plus Thomas Haley of Winter Harbor and His Descendants) compiled by Maine's Foremost Genealogist, 1916-1963. 3 vols. - Walter Goodwin Davis with an Introduction by Gary Boyd Roberts
Hardcover, Pages: 2,096 pp. total, Published: 1916-1963, Reprinted: 1996
ISBN: 0806314966
Review by Genealogical.com the home page of Genealogical Publishing Company, Clearfield Company, and Gateway Press.
Covers 180 families, all of Davis's colonial forebears plus 19 English families in the immediate ancestry of American immigrants. Of these families 114 lived mostly in Massachusetts; 29 are associated largely with Maine; and 18--Basford, Brown, Clifford, Cram, Estow, Fernald, Folsom, Gibbons, Gilman, Marston, Moses, Roberts, Roper, Sherburne, Sloper, Taprill, Walton, and Waterhouse--lived largely in New Hampshire, primarily Hampton, Portsmouth, or Exeter. Most of the 114 Massachusetts families resided in Essex County, a few in Middlesex or Plymouth counties, or in Boston. Thus Massachusetts and Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis is largely a compendium on "north of Boston" families.

Deer Island--In the middle of the 19th century, the island was the landing point for thousands of refugees from the
Irish Potato Famine, many sick and poverty-stricken. In 1847, a hospital was established to treat incoming
immigrants, and during the following two years approximately 4,800 men, women, and children were
admitted. Many recovered and went on to new lives, but more than 800 died.] In 1850, an almshouse was
built to house paupers. Opened in 1853, It was administered by the City of Boston. In 1896 the almshouse
facility became one of the short-term prisons for Suffolk County. The Deer Island House of Correction
existed until 1991, when the prisoners were permanently transferred to the South Bay House of Correction.
